University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs University of Maryland for cybersecurity: which is better for undergrad?

For undergraduate cybersecurity, the University of Maryland has the edge. Maryland’s location near Washington, D.C., its deep ties to federal agencies and defense contractors, and the strength of its cybersecurity ecosystem make it especially strong for internships, research, and direct pipelines into security work. UIUC is excellent in computer science and engineering, but Maryland is the school more specifically plugged into cybersecurity as a field.

The biggest differentiator is access. Maryland students are much closer to employers like NSA, NIST, U.S. Cyber Command, federal labs, and a large cluster of security-focused companies in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area.

Academically, both schools are strong, but in different ways. UIUC offers elite technical depth in computer science, systems, networking, and engineering, which can be a huge advantage if you want a broader high-end computing education and might later specialize through electives, research, or grad school. Maryland, though, is especially well known for information security and cyber-related work across computing, public policy, and government-facing research, so the undergraduate experience can feel more directly aligned with cybersecurity from the start.

If you are more interested in highly theoretical CS, systems, or keeping your options as broad as possible across software, AI, and computing research, UIUC has real appeal. But for cybersecurity specifically, Maryland is the more direct and opportunity-rich choice.
