University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Rutgers for computer science: which is better?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list for computer science and these are two schools I keep comparing. I know both have solid programs, but I'm not sure which one is generally considered the stronger choice for CS.

I want a straightforward comparison of the overall reputation and strength of the computer science program at UIUC versus Rutgers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC has a much stronger national reputation in computer science, while Rutgers is still respected but does not carry the same level of CS prestige or recruiting pull. In CS circles, UIUC is widely viewed as one of the standout public universities in the country, with deep faculty strength, major research output, and very strong employer recognition. Rutgers has a legitimate, solid program, but it is not usually discussed in the same tier as UIUC for computer science.

If you are comparing overall program strength alone, UIUC comes out ahead pretty clearly. Its CS department is known for breadth across subfields, a strong technical culture, and a long track record of producing top students for industry and graduate school. It also benefits from being a place where computing is a major institutional strength, not just one good department among many.

Rutgers is better described as a good, credible option rather than a top destination for CS specifically. You can absolutely get strong outcomes there. But in terms of pure reputation among employers, faculty visibility, and how often the program is mentioned with the top public CS schools, UIUC has the edge by a noticeable margin.

So for a straightforward reputation-and-strength comparison, UIUC is the better computer science school. Rutgers is solid and worthwhile, but UIUC is the one more broadly seen as elite in CS.
