University of Washington vs Stevens Institute of Technology for software engineering: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and recruiting reach versus small-school access. University of Washington gives you a much larger tech ecosystem, stronger name recognition in software on the West Coast, and direct proximity to major employers in Seattle. Stevens offers a more intimate campus, easier access to professors, and a location that connects well to the New York and New Jersey job market.

For software engineering specifically, UW has the clearer edge in overall career value. Its ties to companies like Microsoft and Amazon are a real advantage, and Seattle is one of the best places in the country for software internships during the school year as well as the summer. UW also has a broader computing environment, with more student organizations, research options, startup exposure, and peer networks in tech.

Stevens is still a solid option, especially if you want a more focused, smaller setting and access to internships near NYC. Employers know Stevens, and its students do well in technical fields, but its recruiting footprint is not as expansive as UW’s in software. The Stevens location is excellent for finance-tech, enterprise tech, and internships tied to the Northeast, though it does not match UW’s depth of connection to large-scale consumer tech and cloud companies.

If cost is reasonably close and you have confirmed access to the UW software path, I would choose University of Washington. If UW is uncertain internally or much more expensive, Stevens is the safer and still very employable option.
