Is Georgia Tech or WashU worth it for STEM?

I’m trying to decide whether either of these schools is actually worth the cost for a STEM major. Both seem strong, but I keep hearing different things about reputation, recruiting, and how much the name matters after graduation.

I’m mainly wondering how people usually judge whether a STEM program is “worth it” beyond just prestige.

For STEM, both Georgia Tech and WashU can be worth it, but they are worth it for different kinds of students. Georgia Tech tends to deliver clearer value if you want a heavily technical environment, broad engineering/computing recruiting, and a campus culture where STEM is the center of gravity. WashU makes more sense if you want strong STEM within a more balanced university experience, especially if you may combine science with pre-med, research, humanities, business, or interdisciplinary work.

In practice, “worth it” in STEM usually comes down to four things: total cost, depth of opportunities in your specific major, access to research or internships, and the kind of student environment where you will actually thrive. Name recognition matters, but in most STEM fields your skills, projects, grades, internships, and research output end up carrying more weight than brand alone.

Georgia Tech is especially compelling for students who want engineering, computer science, or applied math in a place where employers actively recruit at scale. Its reputation in engineering and computing is extremely strong, and that tends to translate into dense internship pipelines, lots of technically focused peers, and a curriculum that employers understand well. If your goal is to be surrounded by students building, coding, competing, and recruiting constantly, Tech often feels like the school where the price is easiest to justify.

WashU fits a different student well: someone who wants serious STEM without being locked into a purely technical identity. It is particularly attractive for students interested in biology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, chemistry, or pre-med pathways, and for students who value close faculty access and strong undergraduate support. If you want room to explore across disciplines while still having strong lab access and excellent academics, WashU can absolutely be worth the cost, but the value proposition is often less about raw tech recruiting and more about the full academic experience.

After graduation, the name matters some, especially for first jobs, grad school admissions, and certain employers. But the difference is usually overstated. In STEM, a Georgia Tech student with solid internships and technical projects will look excellent; a WashU student with strong research, high grades, and relevant experience will also look excellent. The more important question is whether paying the premium leaves you with manageable debt, because large debt can erase a lot of the upside.

A useful test is this: compare the net cost, then look at your intended major’s actual outcomes and opportunities at each school. For engineering and CS, many students would see Georgia Tech as the more obvious return-on-investment option. For life sciences, pre-med, or an interdisciplinary STEM path, WashU can justify itself much more easily.
