Georgia Tech vs. University of Maryland for computer engineering: which is better for an undergrad?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Georgia Tech and the University of Maryland are on it for computer engineering. I know they’re both strong schools, but I’m having a hard time comparing them in a practical way.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to be the better overall choice for an undergraduate CE student in terms of academics, opportunities, and post-college outcomes.

Georgia Tech usually offers the stronger name recognition and a denser engineering culture, while Maryland gives you a very strong CE education with a somewhat broader campus feel and especially strong access to federal labs, defense contractors, and DC-area tech opportunities.

Maryland often gives students a bit more room to explore across the university while still having serious technical opportunities.

For post-college outcomes, both can place students well into industry and graduate school. Georgia Tech tends to carry more weight nationally in engineering circles, especially if you want broad recognition across regions and employers. Maryland’s outcomes are also strong, and its regional network is especially useful on the East Coast and in DC-adjacent sectors.

If cost is similar, I would lean Georgia Tech for undergrad computer engineering because of its stronger engineering brand, depth in ECE, and especially robust technical environment. I would pick Maryland over Tech if the price is meaningfully lower or if you are particularly drawn to DC-area internships, federal research, or a slightly less all-consuming engineering atmosphere.
