Is Rice or Fordham better for finance careers?

I’m a junior trying to narrow down my college list and both Rice and Fordham came up as possibilities. I’m mainly interested in finance and want a school that gives good access to internships and recruiting.

I know both schools have different locations and reputations, so I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better choice for someone aiming at finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Fordham gives you much easier day-to-day access to New York finance internships during the school year, while Rice gives you a more selective overall academic brand and strong placement into finance from a smaller, less NYC-centered pipeline. For finance specifically, location matters a lot because internships, networking, and coffee chats often turn into full-time offers. Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus puts you in Manhattan, and that proximity is a real advantage for students targeting banking, asset management, or other finance roles that recruit heavily in New York.

Rice is excellent academically and very well regarded, but it is not as naturally plugged into Wall Street on a daily basis as Fordham. Its strongest regional advantage is Houston, especially for energy-related finance, investment banking tied to energy, and roles connected to Texas business networks. Rice students can absolutely reach New York finance, but it usually takes more intentional networking and travel than it does at Fordham.

For pure access to internships while you are still in college, Fordham has the edge. Being able to work part-time during semesters, attend events in person, and build relationships in the city is valuable in finance recruiting.

If you are choosing based on long-term overall school prestige and academic selectivity, Rice carries more weight nationally. If you are a very strong student who may want flexibility beyond finance, Rice is the more powerful name overall. But if the question is narrowly about building a finance career as an undergraduate, especially one tied to New York recruiting, Fordham is the more practical choice.
