Is Harvard or Northwestern better for business?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list and I keep seeing both Harvard and Northwestern come up as strong options for business. I know neither one is a traditional undergraduate business school in the same way some other colleges are, so I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better choice for a student interested in business and finance.

For a student interested in business and finance, Harvard usually has the stronger overall pull, especially if you care about access to high-profile finance recruiting, alumni reach, and the signaling power of the Harvard name. Harvard College does not have an undergraduate business major, but students often study economics, applied math, or related fields.

Harvard fits the student who wants maximum flexibility and prestige while building toward business through a liberal arts route. If you are excited by economics, quantitative coursework, student investing groups, entrepreneurship clubs, and broad access across industries, Harvard gives you a very deep platform. It is especially attractive for students who may start with finance in mind but want to keep doors open to policy, tech, law, or graduate school.

Northwestern makes more sense for the student who wants business-adjacent options built more directly into the undergraduate experience. It also does not offer a traditional undergrad business major, but programs like Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, economics, industrial engineering, and the Kellogg Certificate can be appealing for students who want a more structured pre-professional angle. Northwestern is particularly strong for students interested in combining business with communications, engineering, or media.

For straight finance recruiting, Harvard tends to carry more weight and broader reach. For a student who wants a highly respected school with excellent business outcomes but also likes the idea of a slightly more interdisciplinary and professionally oriented path, Northwestern can be a very smart choice. If your interest is specifically business and finance, Harvard is the one that more often stands out on a college list.
