Is Georgetown or American University better for access to Washington, DC?

American University usually gives students easier day-to-day access to Washington, DC. Its campus is right by the Tenleytown-AU Metro stop on the Red Line, which makes getting downtown, to internships, museums, and neighborhoods around the city much more straightforward. Georgetown University is also in DC, but its campus is in Georgetown, a beautiful and active neighborhood that notably does not have its own Metro stop, so students rely more on buses, shuttles, rideshares, or longer walks.

For a student who wants the city to feel built into weekly life, American often feels more convenient. You can get on the Metro quickly and reach places like Dupont Circle, downtown offices, and Smithsonian museums without much planning. That matters a lot when you are juggling classes with internships, events, or exploring the city on weekends.

Georgetown can still feel very connected to DC, just in a different way. The neighborhood itself is one of the city’s most vibrant areas, with shops, restaurants, and access to parts of northwest DC right outside campus. Students do take advantage of internships and policy opportunities across the city, but commuting tends to be a little less seamless because there is no nearby Metro station directly serving campus.

If your priority is practical transportation and using DC constantly, American has the edge. If you like the idea of being rooted in one of DC’s most distinctive neighborhoods and do not mind using buses or shuttles more often, Georgetown still offers strong access to the city, just with a bit more friction.
