Is Georgetown or William & Mary more prestigious for college admissions and reputation?

I’m trying to understand how these two schools are generally viewed by students, employers, and people in higher education. I know both are strong schools, but they seem to have different reputations depending on the region and major.

I’m comparing them as a high school senior and want a simple sense of which one is usually considered more prestigious overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is national brand versus public-flagship-style reputation. Georgetown usually carries the stronger overall prestige nationally, especially in politics, international affairs, business, and law-adjacent fields, while William & Mary is deeply respected for academic rigor, undergraduate teaching, and its standing on the East Coast, particularly in Virginia and nearby regions.

Among students, employers, and people in higher education, Georgetown is more often the name that gets instant recognition across the country. Its location in Washington, DC, and well-known schools like the Walsh School of Foreign Service and McDonough School of Business give it a broader prestige profile. William & Mary has an excellent reputation too, but it is usually seen as a quieter, more academically traditional school rather than a high-visibility national brand.

In higher education circles, William & Mary often earns a lot of respect for being one of the country’s oldest colleges, its strong liberal arts focus, and the seriousness of its student body. That said, if someone is asking very simply which name is more prestigious overall, Georgetown is the one more people will identify as having the stronger national reputation.

So if the question is strictly overall prestige and reputation, Georgetown comes out ahead. William & Mary is still a highly respected school, and in some settings it may be viewed just as favorably, but Georgetown is more consistently perceived as the more prestigious name across regions and industries.
