Tulane vs Ohio State for pre-med: which is better for undergrad?

Tulane has the edge for pre-med undergraduate preparation. Its location in New Orleans puts students close to major hospitals and public health settings, the university is especially known for service and community health, and the smaller undergraduate environment often makes advising and faculty access feel more direct.

Clinical exposure is one of the clearest differences. Tulane students can tap into a dense medical ecosystem in New Orleans, including hospitals, clinics, and community-based health programs that align well with pre-med interests. That matters because meaningful patient-facing work and sustained service are easier to build when opportunities are woven into the city and the school’s culture.

Advising and undergraduate attention also tend to favor Tulane. At a smaller private university, it is often easier to get to know professors, secure recommendation letters, and navigate pre-health advising without feeling like one of a huge crowd. For pre-med students, that can make a real difference when choosing courses, finding research mentors, and staying on top of committee processes.

Ohio State still brings real advantages, especially sheer scale. Its research enterprise is enormous, there are many labs and a major academic medical center, and motivated students can find excellent opportunities.
