Is UCLA or Purdue the better value for an engineering degree?

Purdue fits the student who wants a highly practical engineering environment where the degree itself does a lot of the work in getting employer attention. Companies recruit heavily there across majors like mechanical, electrical, aerospace, civil, and industrial engineering, and the school is especially well known among engineering employers. If your goal is to maximize career payoff per dollar spent, Purdue is very compelling because the outcomes are strong without needing to pay for a big location premium.

UCLA makes more sense for the student whose cost is close to Purdue’s, especially a California resident paying in-state tuition or someone getting strong financial aid. UCLA gives you a top-tier engineering education plus access to the Los Angeles market, which can help with internships in tech, aerospace, media-tech, biotech, and startups. For a student who wants engineering but also values broader cross-campus opportunities, a more urban environment, and easier access to West Coast industries during the school year, UCLA can absolutely justify the price.

The biggest practical factor is residency. If you are in-state for UCLA, the value question gets much closer and UCLA may be the smarter financial choice. If you are out-of-state for UCLA and paying significantly more than Purdue, Purdue is often the cleaner ROI play because the engineering reputation and job outcomes are strong enough that the extra UCLA cost is hard to justify purely on earnings.
