Wake Forest has a more self-contained campus in Winston-Salem, with a classic college environment where a lot of social life happens on or around campus.

For walkability, both are easy enough to navigate, but they feel different. Wake’s campus is more unified and polished, so walking between classes, housing, and social spaces tends to feel seamless. CMU is walkable too, but the experience is more city-adjacent and spread across a denser academic setting, with students often moving between campus, Oakland, and nearby Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

Socially, Wake Forest usually comes across as warmer and more visibly communal. School spirit, traditions, and a strong campus-centered social scene are a bigger part of the atmosphere there. CMU can absolutely be friendly and collaborative, especially within certain programs and project-based work, but the overall vibe is often more independent, quirky, and focused on what people are building or studying.

Carnegie Mellon makes more sense if you like an energetic, intellectually serious environment and do not mind that the vibe can feel more intense and less traditionally collegiate.
