University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Dartmouth for small class feel

Dartmouth is the clear choice for a small class feel. Its undergraduate-focused structure, residential scale, and teaching model make day-to-day academics noticeably more personal than UIUC. You are much more likely to experience discussion-based classes, easier professor access, and a campus culture where undergrads are the center of the institution.

The biggest difference is class environment. Dartmouth is built around a liberal arts style experience even though it is a university, so many courses, especially outside the biggest intro classes, are seminar-driven and participation-heavy. At UIUC, there are absolutely smaller upper-level classes and strong faculty relationships available, but the school’s size means more large lectures, especially in popular majors and introductory sequences.

Professor interaction also tilts strongly toward Dartmouth. Because Dartmouth has a smaller undergraduate population and a stronger emphasis on teaching undergrads directly, office hours, advising, and repeated contact with the same faculty tend to happen more naturally. At UIUC, professors can still be accessible, particularly once you get into your department, but the scale of the university often means you will work more through TAs and navigate a bigger system.

Campus feel matters too. Dartmouth’s residential community is tighter, and that usually spills into academics: classmates recognize each other across courses, departments feel smaller, and it is easier to become known as an individual. UIUC can create smaller worlds within the larger campus, especially through honors, living-learning communities, and specific majors, but that intimacy is something you usually have to seek out rather than something built into nearly every part of the experience.
