University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs UC Berkeley for computer engineering: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC tends to offer a more straightforward, department-centered computer engineering experience, while Berkeley can give you a slightly broader, more theory-heavy environment with exceptional prestige and cross-disciplinary reach. Both are outstanding for CE, both place very well into top tech companies and grad school, and both have serious research depth in hardware, systems, and embedded areas.

For computer engineering specifically, UIUC has a particularly strong reputation because ECE is one of the school’s flagship departments, and CE sits very squarely inside that strength. Students often benefit from a large, well-established engineering ecosystem, deep technical course options, and lots of faculty activity across chips, computer architecture, systems, networking, and related areas.

Berkeley is just as elite academically, but the experience can feel a bit different. Berkeley’s EECS culture is intense, highly theoretical in parts, and tightly connected to cutting-edge research and the Bay Area tech ecosystem. That can be a real advantage for research access, startup exposure, and proximity to major employers, though course demand and the pace can feel especially competitive.

On recruiting, neither school is meaningfully weak. UIUC has a long track record with major engineering and semiconductor employers as well as big tech, and Berkeley has enormous visibility with Silicon Valley firms and research-driven companies. In practice, strong students from either place do extremely well, so the difference is less about whether companies recruit there and more about which environment will help you thrive.

If the question is which school is better specifically for computer engineering as a discipline, I’d give UIUC a slight edge for the clarity and depth of the CE path itself. If the question is which school carries the broader all-around tech prestige and Bay Area upside, Berkeley has the edge.
