How do University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Wisconsin compare in selectivity and overall admission difficulty?

I’m trying to figure out how competitive these two schools are compared with each other. I know both are popular public universities, but I’m not sure which one is generally harder to get into.

I’m mostly looking for a simple comparison of selectivity and how admissions difficulty tends to stack up between them.

Both are selective flagship publics, but UIUC is usually harder to get into overall, especially for certain majors. The biggest reason is that Illinois admits by major for many programs, and some of its most sought-after options, especially in engineering, computer science, and business, can be much more competitive than the university as a whole. Wisconsin is also selective, but its admissions process tends to feel a bit more predictable across majors.

For a student applying to a high-demand, pre-professional, or tech-focused program, UIUC often presents the steeper challenge. At Illinois, your intended major can significantly affect your odds, so two applicants with similar profiles may face very different levels of difficulty depending on what they choose.

Wisconsin tends to make more sense as the comparison point for a student applying to a broad liberal arts, sciences, or exploratory path. It is still a strong and popular school with plenty of applicants, especially from out of state, but it is less defined by ultra-competitive direct-entry majors in the same way UIUC is. In practice, that often makes Wisconsin slightly less difficult to enter overall, even though admission is by no means easy.

If you are comparing them at the university-wide level with no specific major in mind, UIUC usually has the edge in selectivity. If you are looking at less impacted majors, the difference may not feel dramatic. But once the application is tied to one of Illinois’s marquee programs, UIUC can become notably tougher than Wisconsin.
