James Madison University vs University of Cincinnati for marketing: which is the better choice?

I’m trying to decide between James Madison and the University of Cincinnati for a marketing major. Both seem like solid options, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one would be a better fit for getting a strong business education and finding good internship opportunities.

I’m mostly looking for a school that would give me good preparation for a marketing career after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Cincinnati gives you a more built-in path to real work experience during college, while James Madison offers a very well-regarded undergraduate business environment with a more traditional campus feel. For marketing specifically, the University of Cincinnati stands out because of its strong ties to a major metro area and its long-established emphasis on co-op and experiential learning. JMU’s business school, though, has a strong undergraduate reputation and is known for solid teaching and strong student engagement.

If your priority is internship access during the school year, Cincinnati has a real advantage. Being in a large city matters for marketing because companies, agencies, startups, healthcare systems, and consumer brands are nearby, and UC has a culture that encourages students to connect classroom learning with employer experience early. That can make it easier to build a resume before senior year rather than relying mostly on summer internships.

JMU is very attractive if you want a classic college-campus experience and a business program that feels especially undergraduate-focused. Its College of Business has a strong reputation among employers in the Mid-Atlantic, and students often describe the environment as collaborative and well organized. For someone who wants strong advising, active student involvement, and a polished business school setting, JMU can be very appealing.

For marketing alone, I would lean toward the University of Cincinnati if career preparation means hands-on experience, networking, and internship volume. Marketing is one of those fields where employers care a lot about what you’ve actually done, whether that is brand work, analytics, social media campaigns, market research, or client-facing projects. Cincinnati’s location and experiential structure make that easier to accumulate.

I’d put JMU ahead only if you strongly prefer its campus culture, want an undergraduate-centered business school, or expect to build your career mainly in regions where JMU has especially strong name recognition. But if the question is which school is more likely to help you graduate with practical marketing experience already on your resume, Cincinnati has the edge.
