How does admissions difficulty at UMass Amherst compare with UC Berkeley for undergraduate applicants?

UC Berkeley is substantially harder to get into than UMass Amherst for undergraduate applicants. Berkeley draws a much larger volume of highly qualified applicants from across California, the rest of the U.S., and abroad, and it sits in the most selective tier of public universities. UMass Amherst is a well-regarded flagship and can be selective for some applicants and programs, but it is not operating at the same overall admissions level as Berkeley.

One big difference is the applicant pool. Berkeley attracts an unusually dense concentration of top academic candidates, including many students with the strongest course rigor available at their schools, which raises the bar across the board. At UMass Amherst, strong grades and course selection still matter a lot, but the overall level of competition is less compressed at the very top.

Another important factor is program-specific selectivity.
