Is Johns Hopkins or Carnegie Mellon better for computer science?

Carnegie Mellon is more highly regarded for computer science. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most established and prominent CS divisions in the country, and CMU has especially deep strength across areas like AI, systems, robotics, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and theory.

Another key difference is scale and focus. At Carnegie Mellon, computer science is a central institutional strength, so there are more specialized tracks, more faculty concentrated in CS-related fields, and a much broader ecosystem built around computing research and recruiting.

Johns Hopkins is absolutely respected in tech-related areas, but its strongest overall reputation is more tied to biomedical engineering, medicine, public health, and research connected to those fields. For a student specifically looking at pure computer science reputation, Hopkins is strong, but it is not usually placed in the same tier of CS prestige as CMU.

The industry signal is different too. CMU carries especially strong name recognition among top tech employers and in graduate-level CS circles, in part because of how long it has been a leader in the field and how many subfields it has shaped.

One place Hopkins can become especially compelling is at the intersection of CS with health, neuroscience, applied math, or data-heavy scientific research. But if the question is simply which school is better known and more powerful specifically for computer science, the clearer answer is Carnegie Mellon.
