Is Duke or Washington University in St. Louis better for an undergraduate business degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Duke gives you stronger brand recognition and a larger on-campus pipeline into finance, consulting, and business-adjacent recruiting, while WashU offers a more direct undergraduate business structure through Olin.

For undergraduate business specifically, WashU is the more straightforward option because Olin has a dedicated undergraduate business program. That means clearer access to business coursework, majors, and a community centered on undergrad business students. Duke does not have a traditional undergraduate business school in the same way, so many students interested in business major in economics, public policy, or another field while using clubs, internships, and recruiting to get into finance, consulting, tech, or entrepreneurship.

For jobs and internships, Duke is usually perceived as having the stronger overall pull, especially on Wall Street, in consulting, and in other highly competitive business pathways. Its alumni network, school-wide prestige, and employer familiarity are major advantages. Duke’s campus culture also supports this path heavily through selective business clubs, finance organizations, and a very active internship recruiting scene.

WashU still places students well, especially if they take advantage of Olin early and build experience consistently. Employers respect WashU, and Olin gives students a more clearly defined business identity as undergraduates.
