University of Washington vs UC San Diego for internships: which is better for computer science students?

For computer science internships, University of Washington usually has the clearer edge. Its location in Seattle puts students close to a dense group of major tech employers, and UW’s CS program has especially strong visibility with recruiters who regularly hire interns during the school year and for summers. That proximity matters because it makes coffee chats, info sessions, part-time roles, and quick interview travel much easier.

Seattle is one of the biggest advantages here. Companies like Amazon and Microsoft have a huge presence nearby, and UW students benefit from being in a city where tech recruiting is woven into campus life. Even beyond the biggest names, there are startups, cloud, gaming, and biotech-tech companies in the region, which gives students more variety when they start looking beyond the obvious places.

UW also tends to feel more connected to local recruiting pipelines in a practical sense. Students can more realistically pursue internships or research during the academic year, not just in the summer, because the commute and employer access are manageable. That can compound over time: one smaller part-time role or lab position during sophomore year often leads to stronger junior-year summer options.

UC San Diego is still very strong, especially if you are interested in areas tied to Southern California tech, biotech, embedded systems, or startups. San Diego has real opportunities, and UCSD has good industry ties, but the local tech scene is not as concentrated or as nationally central for mainstream software recruiting as Seattle’s. Many UCSD students do land excellent internships, including in the Bay Area and elsewhere, but that often depends a bit more on broader application grinding rather than benefiting from the same level of nearby employer saturation.

If internships are the deciding factor by itself, I’d give the advantage to UW because the combination of program reputation, recruiter familiarity, and Seattle access creates a more favorable setup for CS students.
