Virginia Tech vs UVA for biology research opportunities

I’m trying to decide between Virginia Tech and UVA, and biology research is a big part of why I’m looking at both. I want a school where it’s realistically possible to get involved in research as an undergrad, not just in name.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school has stronger biology research opportunities for undergrads and what the experience usually looks like.

UVA has the edge for biology research opportunities if that is your main priority, especially because its undergraduate biology program sits closer to a major medical center and a dense network of life science labs. For straight biology research, especially if you want the broadest access to biomedical and medically adjacent labs, UVA is the more compelling option. For environmental, agricultural, animal, or applied biological research, Virginia Tech can be just as compelling and in some subfields may be the more interesting place to train.
