UMass Amherst makes more sense for students who want the reach and resources of a major public university. Its reputation is especially strong in fields with clear industry pipelines, and employers are very familiar with it. A large alumni base, extensive recruiting, and strong departmental visibility can matter more than abstract prestige, particularly for students heading into tech, engineering, business, public health, or other applied fields.

If someone says Brandeis has more prestige, that is a reasonable shorthand. If someone says UMass Amherst may open more doors in specific majors or through sheer scale and recruiting, that is also reasonable. For college admissions, listing either school is credible; for career opportunities, major and career path will matter more than the prestige gap between them.
