For pre-med, that difference matters because your experience in intro science courses, getting to know professors, and finding research can shape both your GPA and your recommendation letters.

UMass Amherst is attractive if you want the feel of a big science ecosystem. Its biology, chemistry, and public health offerings are strong, and being in the Amherst area can open additional academic and research possibilities through nearby institutions. There are also hospitals and medical settings in the broader region, though getting involved may require more initiative because the campus is not embedded in a major medical center in the way some urban universities are.

Richmond’s advantage is that it can be easier to stand out. Smaller class settings, closer professor relationships, and more structured advising can be especially helpful on the pre-med track, where committee support, mentorship, and early guidance on sequencing courses matter a lot.
