Which building at Amherst College hosts basketball games?
I’m in the process of researching colleges, and Amherst is high on my list because I really want to keep playing basketball in college, even if it’s just for fun. I’ve heard the school has a nice gym, but I couldn't find anywhere that specifically explained which building is actually used for basketball games and practices.
If anyone knows the name of the facility where the Amherst basketball team plays or where students can just shoot hoops, I’d really appreciate it. Also, is it open to general students, or is it just for varsity athletes? It’d be good to know a bit about the vibe and what it’s like if you’re just an average student looking to play pickup games or join a club team.

Amherst College hosts its basketball games in LeFrak Gymnasium, where the college hosts home games and many team practices.
The gym is open during scheduled hours for student use, and pickup games are a popular activity—especially in the evenings and on weekends. If you’re just looking to shoot around or join a casual basketball game, you’ll find other students who aren’t on the varsity teams taking advantage of the courts.
In addition to open gym time, Amherst offers club and intramural basketball for those who want to play more competitively but aren't on the varsity team.
If you want to see the gym or get a feel for the athletic vibe, Amherst's admissions office sometimes includes a look at LeFrak Gym in their campus tours, or you can stop by on your own if you visit campus. It’s worth noting that during varsity practices or games, the facility is reserved for the teams, but outside of those times, students have plenty of access to shoot around or play.
So if playing basketball in a relaxed, social setting is important to you, Amherst offers solid options. Club and intramural leagues can help you get your competitive fix, while pickup games are usually easy to find in LeFrak Gymnasium.
