UCSB has the more beach-centered day-to-day experience. Its campus sits right on the coast in Isla Vista, so the ocean is part of ordinary student life, not just a weekend plan. You can walk or bike to the beach from class, watch sunsets from campus, surf between obligations, and live in a student town built around outdoor social life.

UCLA fits a different kind of student: someone who wants access to beaches, but not necessarily a beach campus. UCLA is in Westwood, so you are fairly close to places like Santa Monica and Venice, but you are not stepping out of class onto the sand. Going to the beach usually takes planning, transportation, and time through LA traffic.

That does not mean UCLA lacks outdoor life. Westwood and greater LA offer great weather, hiking, and plenty of coastal options, and some students like having beach access without making it the center of campus culture.
