How do UCLA and WashU compare for undergraduate teaching and class access?

For undergraduate teaching and class access, WashU usually offers the more intimate day-to-day experience. It is smaller, puts a lot of emphasis on undergraduates, and students often find it easier to get into discussion-based classes earlier and build relationships with professors. UCLA absolutely has excellent teaching and many very dedicated faculty, but the scale of the university means you should expect more large lectures, more competition for certain classes, and a little more self-advocacy if close faculty contact is a top priority.

WashU tends to fit the student who wants professors to feel more reachable from the start. Intro classes can still be sizable, especially in popular premed or STEM tracks, but the campus culture is more centered on undergrads, and office hours, advising, and faculty mentoring are usually easier to access consistently. If you are the kind of student who wants seminar-style discussion, quick recognition from instructors, and a smoother path to recommendation-letter relationships, WashU has an edge.

UCLA works well for the student who is comfortable in a bigger, more energetic academic environment and is willing to navigate it proactively. There are outstanding professors, honors opportunities, research access, and smaller upper-division classes, but you often have to seek them out. In many departments, especially early on, your closest academic relationships may start with TAs, lab instructors, or smaller discussion sections before they grow into professor mentorship.

For class access specifically, UCLA’s size can make registration and high-demand courses feel more complicated, particularly in popular majors. WashU is usually less frustrating on that front, and students often have an easier time shaping a schedule that includes smaller classes.
