How hard is it to get into Columbia University compared with Tufts University?

Columbia is meaningfully harder to get into than Tufts. In how applicants usually think about them, Columbia sits in the very top tier of U.S. admissions, while Tufts is highly selective but a step below that level of competition. A student who is competitive for Tufts may still be a long shot at Columbia, even with strong grades, rigorous courses, and impressive extracurriculars.
