Is Columbia or UMass Amherst better for computer science?

For computer science itself, Columbia and UMass Amherst are both strong, but they serve somewhat different students. Columbia is the more compelling option for someone who wants a highly selective private university setting, easy access to New York’s tech and finance ecosystem, and a CS education tied closely to a broader liberal arts and engineering environment. UMass Amherst stands out for students who want a large, well-established CS department with a strong identity in the field, more depth across computing subareas, and often a more straightforward CS-centered experience.

On the program side, UMass Amherst has a long-standing reputation in computer science that is stronger than many people assume from the school’s overall brand. Its department is large, well known for systems, AI, theory, and interdisciplinary computing work, and it tends to offer the feeling of being at a place where CS is one of the university’s signature strengths. If you want lots of faculty in the field, a broad course catalog, and a campus culture where many peers are deeply focused on computing, UMass can be very appealing.

Columbia makes more sense for a student who wants CS plus the advantages of being in Manhattan. That can matter for internships during the academic year, startup exposure, research connections, and networking with companies nearby. Columbia’s program is respected, but the appeal is often the combination of solid CS, strong overall academics, and location rather than the idea that the CS department alone clearly outclasses UMass Amherst.

If you are judging only the CS program, the choice is much closer than overall prestige might suggest, and a student who is serious about CS would not be choosing "lesser" academics by picking UMass Amherst.
