So in certain circles, especially in Northern California, people may speak of Santa Clara with a lot of respect even if it does not have the same across-the-board public reputation as UC Davis.

For grad school, both can work very well, but grad admissions usually care much more about your grades, research, internships, and recommendations than a small difference in brand name. If the question is simply which school is more prestigious overall, UC Davis is the one more people would likely name.
