Is Duke worth the extra cost compared with UMass Amherst for undergrad?

UMass Amherst can still lead to excellent outcomes, but students often need to be more proactive about finding the same level of individual attention and opportunity.

For undergrad, Duke can be worth the extra cost when the price difference will not create serious financial strain for your family or require large student loans. The value is not just the name. It is the combination of smaller classes earlier on, stronger funding, easier access to internships and research, and a campus culture built around residential student life and close faculty engagement. Those things matter most if you want fields where network effects and early mentorship can open doors, such as finance, consulting, certain tech paths, academia, or competitive pre-med and pre-law trajectories.

UMass Amherst is the smarter choice when the extra cost at Duke would mean major debt or meaningful sacrifice for your family. For most students, avoiding heavy undergraduate debt beats paying a premium for prestige, especially if you may later pay for medical school, law school, or another graduate degree. UMass has strong academics, especially in several STEM and business-related areas, and motivated students there can absolutely build strong resumes.
