Is UVA or Howard better for pre-law?

Both can get you to law school, but they support different kinds of students very well. Your choice should hinge less on the label “pre-law” and more on where you are most likely to earn excellent grades, build close faculty relationships, and stay motivated over four years.

UVA makes a lot of sense for someone who wants a large, well-resourced university with extensive advising options, many research and writing-heavy majors, and strong connections to government, public policy, and legal institutions. If you are the kind of student who will actively seek out professors, student organizations, debate or public service work, and competitive internships, UVA gives you a very deep bench of opportunities.

Howard stands out for a student who wants their pre-law path to be closely tied to social justice, public service, and a historically Black university environment with a distinct legacy in producing lawyers, judges, and civic leaders. Its location in Washington, D.C. is a real advantage for legal internships during the school year, and that can matter a lot if you want hands-on exposure to nonprofits, federal agencies, advocacy groups, or congressional offices. Howard can be an especially meaningful place if you want mentorship and community in spaces centered on Black excellence and leadership.

For building a strong law school application, the biggest factors will still be GPA, LSAT, writing ability, and substantive experiences. UVA may give you a somewhat wider platform and broader institutional visibility, but Howard may give you more direct access to certain D.C.-based opportunities and a community that sharpens your sense of purpose.
