Is Stanford worth choosing over Michigan for college?

I’m trying to decide between Stanford and Michigan, and I keep getting stuck on whether the extra prestige and resources at Stanford are actually worth it. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mostly thinking about overall value for the college experience and what you get out of it long term.

I’m not asking about one specific major, just whether Stanford is generally worth it compared with Michigan.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Stanford gives you a smaller, more residential, more tightly resourced undergraduate experience, while Michigan gives you a much larger university with broader scale, more visible school spirit, and often a much lower price. Stanford’s advantages are real: easier access to faculty, very strong undergraduate funding and advising, and a campus culture deeply connected to entrepreneurship, tech, and high-impact research. Michigan’s advantages are also real: outstanding academics across almost everything, a huge alumni network, and an overall college experience that is hard to match in energy and breadth.

For overall college experience, the two also feel very different. Stanford is more intimate, warmer year-round, and often more flexible and exploratory in vibe. Michigan feels bigger, louder, and more traditional, with a stronger sense of large-campus momentum and community identity.

So in most cases, yes, Stanford is worth choosing over Michigan if the financial difference is manageable. If Stanford would require substantially more debt or financial strain, Michigan becomes the smarter value very quickly because its academic and career upside is already elite.
