Is the University of Michigan or Princeton better for engineering?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools keep coming up for engineering. I know they have very different campus sizes and vibes, but I'm mostly trying to understand which one is generally considered stronger for engineering overall.

I'm a high school junior looking at engineering majors and want to know which school would be the better choice for that path.

For engineering overall, the University of Michigan is more widely regarded as the stronger and deeper option. Michigan’s College of Engineering is much larger, offers a broader range of engineering majors and subfields, and has a long-established reputation built around engineering as one of the university’s core strengths. Princeton has excellent engineering, but it is smaller in scale and not usually the first school people point to when comparing comprehensive engineering programs head to head.

Princeton’s edge is not raw engineering scale but its undergraduate experience. Classes can feel more intimate, access to professors may be easier, and the university puts major emphasis on undergraduate research. For a student interested in combining engineering with theoretical work, close faculty mentorship, or a more seminar-style academic environment, Princeton can be especially appealing.

So if the question is which school is considered stronger specifically for engineering as a field, Michigan has the clearer reputation advantage. Princeton is still outstanding, just with a smaller and more research-university-meets-liberal-arts approach to engineering than Michigan’s large, highly developed engineering powerhouse model.
