Which is better for financial aid: University of Michigan or Rice University?

Rice University is usually the more affordable option for students with significant financial need, especially if you are not a Michigan resident. Rice is a private university with a well-known commitment to meeting demonstrated need and reducing loans for many families, while the University of Michigan’s aid tends to be much stronger for in-state students than for out-of-state students. For many middle- and lower-income families, that difference is the biggest factor.

Rice’s financial aid approach is often more generous because it uses its own institutional funds to keep costs down for admitted students with need. In practice, that can mean lower net prices and less reliance on loans than you might see at many large public universities.

Michigan can be excellent on aid for Michigan residents, and in-state students often get a much more manageable price than out-of-state students.
