Notre Dame vs WashU for undergraduate teaching quality: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Notre Dame tends to offer a more intentionally undergraduate-centered experience across the whole university, while WashU is often praised for smaller classes and close faculty interaction but can feel a bit more pre-professional and decentralized depending on the department. If undergraduate teaching is your main lens, Notre Dame has a particularly strong reputation for faculty investment in undergrads, partly because the university’s identity puts a lot of emphasis on teaching, advising, and residential student life. WashU also does many things well here, especially in fields where hands-on mentoring and research access matter, but the feel is somewhat different.

At Notre Dame, undergraduates are very much the center of campus culture. Professors are typically accessible, office hours matter, and the residential hall system helps create a strong support structure beyond the classroom. The advising and community piece often makes the teaching feel more personal, even at a school with some larger intro courses.

If I were choosing strictly on teaching quality for undergrads, I would give Notre Dame a slight edge overall because the whole institution is so clearly organized around the undergraduate experience, not just the classroom itself. WashU is absolutely competitive on professor access and academic support, and some students will prefer its style, but Notre Dame is a little more likely to deliver the kind of cohesive, supportive teaching environment you seem to be prioritizing.
