Is Columbia or Stanford more stressful for undergraduates?
I’m trying to figure out which school would be a better fit for me, and stress level is a big part of that.
I know both are super intense academically, but I keep hearing different things about the overall vibe, workload, and pressure at Columbia versus Stanford.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Columbia tends to feel more structurally intense day to day, while Stanford often feels more flexible but can still be very high pressure in a quieter, less visibly stressed way. Columbia’s Core Curriculum creates a more fixed academic path and can make semesters feel packed, especially in New York where the pace around campus is fast. Stanford gives students more room to shape their schedule and academic experience, and its campus culture is often described as more relaxed on the surface, with better weather and more physical space helping that feel.
For many undergraduates, Columbia is more stressful in the immediate, everyday sense. The combination of the Core, demanding classes, dense urban environment, and a culture where students are often visibly busy can make the pressure feel constant. Students often talk about rushing between classes, clubs, research, internships, and city opportunities, which can make it harder to mentally step away.
Stanford is absolutely not low-stress, but the stress can show up differently. It has intense academics, ambitious peers, and a strong achievement culture, especially around tech, entrepreneurship, and research. But because students usually have more curricular flexibility and a more spacious residential campus, the experience often feels less compressed and less relentlessly scheduled than Columbia.
Another difference is social atmosphere. Columbia can feel more intellectually intense and externally busy, while Stanford is often described as more collaborative and more balanced in tone, even though many students are still pushing themselves very hard. That means Stanford may feel emotionally easier for some students, but it can still carry subtle pressure to be impressive in multiple areas at once.
If stress level is a major factor, Stanford is usually perceived as the less stressful undergraduate environment overall. Columbia can be an amazing fit for students who like structure, fast pace, and intellectual intensity, but Stanford more often offers the breathing room that makes that intensity feel manageable.
