Boston College vs Duke for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

Duke has the edge for an undergraduate biology major. Its biology department is larger, its research ecosystem is deeper because of the medical school and major health-science infrastructure, and undergraduates have unusually strong access to lab work across biology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, ecology, and global health. If your priority is the strongest overall platform for biology coursework, research, and science-path preparation, Duke is the more compelling option.

One big differentiator is research access. Duke benefits from being tied closely to a major research university with extensive life-science activity, including Duke Health, the medical school, and multiple interdisciplinary institutes. That creates more volume and variety in labs, which matters for biology students because it increases the odds of finding a niche in areas like genetics, cell biology, marine science, evolution, or human disease.

Another difference is the academic breadth around biology.
