University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Rice for computer science: which is better?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list for computer science, and these two schools keep coming up. I know both are strong, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered the better choice for CS.

I’m mostly trying to understand how they compare overall for a CS student.

For computer science specifically, UIUC is more often viewed as the higher-powered CS destination, while Rice is the more intimate, flexible university experience with strong CS attached to it. UIUC’s CS program has a huge national reputation, very deep course offerings, and unusually strong recruiting in software, systems, AI, and quant-oriented paths. Rice is excellent too, but its advantage is less about sheer CS scale and more about small classes, close faculty access, and a more personal campus culture.

UIUC fits the student who wants to be surrounded by a massive, highly technical CS ecosystem. There are many specialized electives, lots of research activity, major student engineering organizations, and a large peer group of serious coders. That environment can be energizing if you want breadth, competition, and the feeling that nearly every subfield of CS is available at a high level. Employers know UIUC CS extremely well, and it has long-standing strength with top tech recruiting.

Rice makes more sense for the student who wants a top private-school experience where CS is strong but the university does not feel dominated by scale. Its residential college system creates a tighter community, and students often have easier access to professors and undergraduate opportunities without navigating such a large department. Rice can be especially appealing if you value interdisciplinary freedom, lower bureaucracy, and a campus culture that feels collaborative rather than intensely crowded.

If the question is pure CS prestige, depth, and industry recognition in computer science, UIUC usually has the edge. If the question is where a student may get a more personal undergraduate experience while still studying strong CS, Rice has a real case.
