University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Texas A&M for electrical engineering: which is better for undergrad?

For electrical engineering specifically, UIUC has the edge. Its ECE department is one of the most established and widely respected in the country, the curriculum is especially strong in both theory and advanced technical depth, and employers and grad programs know the Illinois name very well in circuits, semiconductors, computing-adjacent EE, and related research areas.

The biggest differentiator is the department itself. At UIUC, electrical and computer engineering is a flagship program with a long record of influence in microelectronics, signal processing, communications, controls, and hardware-software systems.

Another difference is the academic environment. UIUC’s EE track is known for being rigorous and intellectually intense, which can be a real advantage if you want a deeply technical undergraduate experience. Texas A&M is also very solid and well regarded, but its engineering ecosystem often feels more broadly industry-focused and less singularly identified with EE at the national level than Illinois.

Research and specialized opportunities also lean toward UIUC. Because the ECE department is such a major presence on campus, undergrads can tap into a large volume of labs, design work, technical student organizations, and advanced coursework tied closely to faculty research.

Texas A&M still has real strengths: a huge engineering community, strong employer connections, a powerful alumni network, and a campus culture many students love. But on pure undergraduate electrical engineering quality and reputation, UIUC is the school more people in engineering would place a step higher.
