For economics careers, is UCLA or the University of Chicago better overall?

I’m trying to choose between UCLA and the University of Chicago and want to study economics. I’m interested in the school that would give me the stronger path into economics-related careers after college.

I know both are strong schools, but I’m not sure how they compare in terms of reputation, recruiting, and preparation for jobs in economics.

The University of Chicago is the stronger choice overall for economics careers. Its economics department is one of the most influential in the field, the major is deeply quantitative and theory-driven, and the school has especially strong pull with employers in consulting, finance, research, and policy-oriented roles. For a student who wants the most direct brand advantage in economics-related recruiting, Chicago usually carries more weight.

One major difference is the academic ecosystem around economics. At Chicago, economics is central to the university’s identity in a way that very few schools can match. That means more access to faculty whose work shapes the discipline, a campus culture that takes econ very seriously, and coursework that tends to prepare students well for analytical careers and graduate study. UCLA has an excellent economics program too, but economics is not quite as defining a part of the institution’s reputation.

Recruiting also tilts toward Chicago, especially for east coast finance, top consulting firms, economic research roles, and pathways that value intense quantitative training. Chicago’s smaller size can help undergraduates stand out more directly in recruiting and faculty relationships. UCLA offers strong access to the Los Angeles job market and a huge alumni base, which is very useful, but its scale can make opportunities feel more self-directed and competitive to navigate.

Preparation for economics-related work is another place where Chicago has an edge. Employers often view Chicago econ students as very well trained in rigorous analysis, statistics, and economic reasoning. That said, UCLA can absolutely lead to excellent outcomes, especially if cost matters a lot, if you want to be in California long term, or if you prefer a larger and broader campus environment. But on the specific question of overall strength for economics careers, Chicago comes out ahead.
