Is Michigan or Brown better for med school admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure and grading pressure: Michigan gives you a huge academic medical ecosystem with abundant research and hospital connections, while Brown is known for a more flexible curriculum that can make it easier to protect your GPA and shape a less stressful premed path. For med school admissions, both can get students to strong outcomes, but they help in different ways. Brown’s Open Curriculum, smaller undergraduate environment, and advising culture are often attractive for premeds because course planning can be more flexible and students may find it easier to build a coherent academic story without as many distribution requirements.

Michigan’s advantage is scale. You have access to a major academic medical center, a very large research enterprise, broad clinical opportunities in Ann Arbor, and many science departments with serious depth. If you are proactive, that can be a huge asset for finding labs, shadowing, and medically related extracurriculars. The tradeoff is that intro science courses can feel more competitive and the university is large enough that students often need to push harder to get individualized attention.

Brown’s advantage is that the undergraduate experience is often described as more student-centered. Smaller classes outside the biggest intros, easier faculty access, and the freedom to explore without the same kind of core requirements can matter a lot when you are trying to keep a high GPA while also doing research, service, and clinical work. Brown also has strong hospital and research connections through its medical school and affiliated institutions in Providence, so it is not lacking in opportunities.
