Which is better for computer science, UC Berkeley or the University of British Columbia?

UC Berkeley is more widely regarded as the stronger computer science program overall, especially for academic reputation, research depth, and industry visibility. Berkeley’s EECS and Computer Science programs have an unusually strong presence in core CS areas like systems, AI, theory, and machine learning, and that reputation carries a lot of weight with both graduate schools and employers. It also benefits from being tightly connected to the Bay Area tech ecosystem in a way very few schools can match.

One big differentiator is faculty scale and research intensity within computer science itself. Berkeley has long been one of the most influential departments in the field, with major strengths across both theoretical and applied CS, plus extensive undergraduate access to advanced coursework and research-adjacent opportunities. UBC is a very respected research university, but in CS it is not usually placed in the same top-tier global conversation as Berkeley.

Another difference is name recognition specifically within tech and computer science circles. UBC has an excellent international reputation and is especially well known in Canada, but Berkeley’s CS brand is stronger worldwide, particularly in the US tech industry. For internships, startups, and recruiting pipelines into major tech companies, Berkeley tends to have more built-in momentum.

That said, UBC is still a very strong option academically and can be an excellent choice if cost, location, or immigration considerations matter to you. But if the question is purely which school is seen as stronger for computer science overall, Berkeley has the clearer edge.
