Is UC Davis or Middlebury generally considered more prestigious among colleges?

Middlebury is usually viewed as more prestigious in overall undergraduate reputation, especially in the private liberal arts college world. It is a highly selective small college with a long-established national brand, strong placement into graduate school and fellowships, and a reputation for close faculty access. UC Davis is also very well respected, but its reputation is often more tied to being a major public research university and to particular academic strengths rather than to broad elite-college prestige.

One big difference is the type of institution each one is. Middlebury is known for a small, intensive undergraduate experience, and schools like that often carry a certain cachet because of their selectivity, seminar-style classes, and strong alumni networks in fields like consulting, policy, academia, and the nonprofit world. That creates a perception of prestige that is especially strong among people familiar with liberal arts colleges.

UC Davis has a different kind of reputation. It is part of the UC system, which gives it strong name recognition, and it is especially admired in areas like agriculture, environmental studies, biology, veterinary medicine, and other research-driven fields. In California and in many science-related circles, Davis can carry a lot of weight, but people usually do not talk about it in quite the same prestige tier as top private liberal arts colleges.

The biggest caveat is that reputation depends a lot on audience. Someone in academia, environmental science, public health, or West Coast industries may be very impressed by UC Davis. Someone focused on elite small colleges, humanities, languages, or traditional undergraduate teaching prestige is more likely to put Middlebury higher.
