Which is generally considered more prestigious: William & Mary or Notre Dame?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Notre Dame has broader national name recognition, while William & Mary is especially respected in certain circles for academics, public service, and East Coast reputation. In everyday general perception across the U.S., Notre Dame is more widely seen as the more prestigious name. William & Mary is absolutely a highly respected school, but its reputation is often more concentrated among people familiar with selective public universities, government, law, history, and East Coast academic circles.
