Is William & Mary or Notre Dame better for finance students?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both William & Mary and Notre Dame are options I’m considering for finance. I know the schools have different vibes, but I’m mainly wondering which one is generally better for someone who wants to study finance and end up in a strong business career path.
I’m not asking about this year’s rankings or admissions odds, just the overall fit for finance and career opportunities.

Notre Dame is the stronger option for finance students. Its Mendoza College of Business is a major advantage because you are applying into a well-established undergraduate business school with a clear finance pathway, strong employer recognition, and a large alumni network that is especially active in business fields.
Another big difference is recruiting structure. Notre Dame tends to have more direct pipelines into finance-related internships and jobs, including investment banking, consulting, corporate finance, and accounting, and its alumni presence is notably strong in major cities like Chicago and New York. For a student who wants a more defined business ecosystem from the start, that matters a lot.
William & Mary can still work very well, but the setup is different. Its undergraduate business school is smaller and respected, and students often benefit from close faculty access and a collaborative environment, but the national business brand is not as broad or as immediately recognizable in finance circles as Notre Dame’s.
The campus culture also affects the experience. Notre Dame has a more traditional, highly spirited campus environment with a very connected alumni community, and that can translate into networking advantages that continue long after graduation. William & Mary has a more low-key, intellectual feel, which some students prefer, but for pure finance career momentum, Notre Dame usually offers the more built-out platform.
