William & Mary or Emory for undergraduate research opportunities?

Emory has the edge for undergraduate research in biology because it combines a major research university environment with access to biomedical labs, hospitals, and funded summer programs. Its biology students can tap into work not just on the main campus but also through the School of Medicine, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Rollins School of Public Health, and nearby CDC connections in Atlanta.

That research ecosystem matters if you want breadth and depth in biology. Emory offers many lab areas tied to human health, neuroscience, genetics, infectious disease, and public health, and undergraduates often benefit from formal structures like summer research programs, research funding, and advising.

William & Mary is very good on the mentorship side, and that is its biggest advantage here. Because it is smaller and more undergraduate-focused, students often build close relationships with faculty, and professors can be highly accessible. If your priority is a tight-knit academic setting where faculty know undergrads well, William & Mary can make research feel more personal and less layered by graduate and medical programs.

The tradeoff is scale. William & Mary has solid biology research and support for undergraduate scholarship, but it does not match Emory’s biomedical infrastructure, lab variety, or health-related institutional partnerships. For a student specifically aiming to start early in biology and build substantial lab experience over four years, Emory usually provides more pathways and more kinds of research settings.

William & Mary can still deliver meaningful faculty-led research, but Emory offers the broader runway.
