Is William & Mary or Washington and Lee considered more prestigious?

Its name is more likely to be immediately recognized by a broad range of students, families, and employers, particularly in Virginia, D.C., and nearby regions. People often associate it with strong academics, seriousness, and a public Ivy type reputation.

Washington and Lee is also highly regarded, but its prestige can feel more concentrated and somewhat more insider-driven. Among people who know selective liberal arts colleges well, W&L can be viewed as extremely prestigious, but outside those circles it may require more explanation than William & Mary.
