How do University of Michigan and UNC Chapel Hill compare in admissions selectivity?

The biggest practical difference is residency: both University of Michigan and UNC Chapel Hill are selective, but UNC is much harder for out-of-state applicants, while Michigan is highly competitive for everyone yet often feels a bit more accessible for nonresidents than UNC does. Both schools get very large applicant pools and attract many strong students, but UNC’s public mission gives a clearer edge to North Carolina residents.
