Is UChicago or Columbia better for business majors and finance careers?
I’m a high school senior trying to figure out which school would be a better fit if I want to study business and possibly work in finance after college. I know neither school is a traditional undergraduate business school, so I’m mainly comparing how strong they are for internships, recruiting, and building a career path.
I’m trying to understand which one tends to give students a better advantage for business-related goals.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus curriculum structure. Columbia gives you immediate access to New York finance during the school year, which can make networking, part-time internships, and informational meetings much easier. UChicago, meanwhile, is especially respected for economics, analytics, and rigorous quantitative preparation.
For finance careers specifically, Columbia has a very real edge in proximity. Being in Manhattan matters when banks, buy-side firms, and alumni events are a subway ride away, and that convenience can translate into more touchpoints with the industry before junior-summer recruiting is over.
UChicago is absolutely a serious finance pipeline too, and in some circles it may be seen as the more academically intense training ground for economics and data-driven decision-making. If you are interested in areas like quantitative finance, research-heavy investing, or a more analytical route into business, UChicago’s strengths stand out.
One important difference is day-to-day academic style. Columbia’s Core is substantial, but the student experience around finance can feel more plugged into the industry early. UChicago also has a Core, yet the overall culture tends to be more theoretical, intellectual, and economics-forward, which some students love and others find less directly pre-professional.
If your main goal is maximizing access to finance recruiting and networking while in college, I would lean Columbia. If you want a more quantitatively rigorous academic foundation with excellent finance outcomes, UChicago is a very compelling alternative. For straight business and finance access, Columbia has the cleaner advantage; for academic preparation tied to economics and analytical business thinking, UChicago is at least as appealing.
