Should I apply to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Duke first if I want to maximize my chances of getting into one of them?

Apply to UIUC first if your goal is to maximize the odds of getting into at least one of the two. UIUC is selective in many programs, especially engineering, computer science, and business, but Duke is on a different level of overall admissions difficulty. Duke’s process is far more limiting for almost everyone, while UIUC gives many applicants a more realistic path depending on major, residency, and academic profile.

One big difference is how much the intended major matters. At UIUC, admission can vary a lot by college and program, so your chances are tied closely to what you apply for. Some majors are much more accessible than others, and UIUC is especially known for being tough in high-demand fields. Duke does not admit by major in the same rigid way for most students, but that does not make it easier. It means the competition is intense across the board.

Another difference is application style. Duke puts heavier weight on highly polished essays, strong extracurricular distinction, and a very compelling overall story. UIUC also cares about fit and writing, but the application is usually more straightforward and can feel more predictable, especially if your academics line up well with the program.

Residency also matters. If you are in-state for Illinois, UIUC becomes even more worth prioritizing because the odds and affordability often improve meaningfully. Duke does not offer that kind of geographic advantage in admissions.
